Block Island can be seen off the coast of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. Block Island is coextensive with the town of New Shoreham and was named after the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block. The island is a popular summer tourist destination and is known for its bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean - east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York, and 13 miles south Rhode Island, from which it is separated by Block Island Sound.
