Things to do

Hiking

There are many trails that you can explore on. Hiking is an awesome way to spend your day. There are marked trails throughout Lake, Walloon. If you go on Stolt Road it will take you thru Mill Pond. Camp Sherwood Road will take you south of camp Michigan and Mackinaw State along the forest shoreline. Maybe winter is the season you love? If so, this majestic place has plenty to offer. You can explore the woods and trails on snowshoes or cross country style. When the wetlands have frozen over the wet meadows and cedar swamps are truly amazing, almost taking you back in time.

If hunting is your thing, then this is the place to be. Lake, Walloon has a lot to offer for this timeless tradition. It is controlled hunting, of course, during the regular hunting season and with a permit.

Boating

Maybe boating is your passion. Of course boating is must here. Whether you bring your own boat or rent one here it is a fantastic adventure on the lake. Ride on the Winnebago Road Trip

If you have a car and want a good long trip to tour the lake surroundings, then take on a road trip. The road trip and tour starts at Fond du Lac and goes around the entire lake, then passes through Oshkosh, the Fox Cities, and finishes around Calumet County. You'll be given a brochure so you'll be guided on where to go.

This is a great opportunity to take if you don’t know where to go first, and want an overall view of what’s what around the one of the largest inland lakes. The entire trip lasts about an hour and a half, perhaps longer if you find something you fancy. 

A Visit to the Lakeside Park

Parks have a ton of things to offer. A wide open space for all manner of activities, shelters for groups or individuals to take shade and relax, and a playground to thrill the minds and bodies of children. The Lakeside Park located at 555 N Park Ave, Fond du Lac, has everything a park needs and more. 

Being a lakeside park, it has a Waterfront outdoor area, boat rentals, mini carousels and mini-train rides, and even has a quaint lighthouse for photo-ops and an overall nice place to sightsee. 

If you plan on going as a large group, you may contact the park management to have them reserve a shelter for you. 

Menominee Park Zoo

This is something for the kids and animal lovers alike. Located at 520 Pratt Trail in Oshkosh, this seasonal zoo offers a lot of things to do, with the animal attraction being the icing on the cake. It has Asphalt trails, Boat tie-ups, Casting docks, Fishing, Picnic Areas, and Shelter.

For people who are looking for some exercise, there’re two soccer fields, five baseball or softball fields, five volleyball courts, and an ice skating rink. 

Ultimately, there’s a lot of things you can do here, even just relaxing on the bleachers. There’s plenty of concession stands in case you need snacks. The place is handicap accessible and they are available for special events. 

History of Lake Travis: Floods that Brought Flourish

Natural disasters are, well, disastrous to everyone affected by it. Yet as nature had proven, every disaster is an opportunity for growth. One such story of bustling life after a disaster had struck, is Lake Travis’ history.

A Dam to Protect and Serve

The lands that surround the winding waters of Lake Travis is rich. Enough to have people set up farms despite a terrible setback: flooding. This humble area of in the city of Austin, Texas was somewhat prone to immense flooding. The flooding occurs when lake water levels rise up, swallowing the surrounding land. There’s extreme potential in the lands around the lake if it wasn’t for the yearly floods.

You could say that the people of Lake Travis had enough. In 1935, a torrential summer rain brought about high floods that devastated the areas of Austin. To preserve their ways of living and pursue greater dreams, the denizens of Lake Travis banded together and formed a committee to solve the flood problems. In December 1936, the Lower Colorado River Authority was born. Authorized by the United States Department of the Interior, this group was given the task of preventing further floods from wiping the surrounding lands.

Their first course of action was to create a dam to have increased water supply. They decided on a low dam first, since it would be quick to build, and enough to suppress small floods and be a flood control mechanism. The dam was built at the Marshall Ford area and went as high as 190 feet. It was then named the Marshall Ford Dam, aptly because of the location.

Two years later, the dam met its match. A huge flood rose and spilled through the dam during a downpour in July. The Lower Colorado River Authority banded together once more and decided to raise the dam. From around 190 feet, it was raised to 265 feet to counter the previous flood height, and more, should the skies decide to test them. On August 25, 1942, it was renamed to Mansfield Dam. This was in honor of Joseph Jefferson Mansfield, a United States Representative. J.J Mansfield worked for two years to ensure that the dam is getting what it needs to be built.

Thanks to the dam, the people that make their homes and living around Lake Travis find themselves worrying less about the floods and more about how they can make the most out of their lives and livelihood. With the floods less of an issue, the lake now provides a source of income for all people. Its calm waters make for great boating opportunities. The depth and expanse of the lake are also ideal for scuba diving, swimming, fishing, and even more exciting water activities such as wakeboarding.

Presently, there is a power plant situated on the dam. This hydroelectric power plant generates 108 megawatts. That amount is enough to power more than 30,000 homes. Not only does the dam prevent floods, it also powers homes and business.

What started as a land that suffers yearly from floods, now has a dam that generates power for its people, and rich resources to make a more-than-decent living. Now, this humble abode in the city of Austin, Texas is a has a great flood control mechanism that makes it a rich water supply source and a great place to stay.

Must Do’s When Visiting Lake Travis

Lake Travis’ winding, dragon-like shape is already a sight on its own. The road trips are great here and vacation rentals. But why settle for views alone if the place offers more, much more than that?

Hey, Cupcake!

What’s Hey Cupcake? It’s a nice shiny little trailer with a big pink cupcake on top. They sell cupcakes, hence the name. Why mention it here? Because they are the first food trailer to ever set foot in Lake Travis. They sell cupcakes and ice-cream, with seasonal recipes worth watching out for, such as the winter-season mint-chocolate cupcakes, to the Pumpkinator, an autumn treat that sells like pancakes, (or cupcakes for that matter.)

If you want a bite of this, look for the shiny trailer around Ranch Road 620 and 2222. They are pretty hard to miss.

Lake Travis Zipline

Rushing through the air at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour, at a height exceeding 100 feet, with an almost unbeatable view of the lake. Sounds fun? If so, you shouldn’t miss the zip line. It’s 2800 feet of cable, arguably the longest zip line in Texas. This is a great outdoor recreation activity besides the golf courses you might be used to at home. 

Located at 14529 Pocohontas Trail in Leander, the zip line starts on top of a hill. You are then strapped into a special harness which will have you zipping past a body of water and to the other side. The experience may be brief for those watching from afar, but to the ones strapped and sailing through the air, it lasts long enough for a lifetime of memories. Unless you’re a budding thrill seeker, or an enthusiast of outdoor adventures, especially yourself.

Flat Creek Estate Winery

For the connoisseur of all that is fine and wine, Lake Travis has its fair share. Among the distilleries, one worth mentioning is the Flat Creek Estate Winery. They offer great food (with pizzas and pastries being the people’s choice), wine tasting, and an amazing ambiance that really puts it all together.

This land of goodness is located around 24912 Singleton Bend East Rd in Marble Falls. You can choose to either wander around for a bit or sit down and have the staff serve you. Once you’re nice and fed, you can have a tour of the Marble Falls and partake in some wine tasting. If you want to take home some of the goodness, you can purchase one from their gallery of unique wine and spirits.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

This is not just any ordinary swimming hole, Hamilton Pool Preserve is one that is rich in nature. The place is filled with nearly everything nature can display when it comes to rock and water. There are waterfalls, pools under natural rock formations, and enough greenery to satisfy any nature-lovers.

Located in 24300 Hamilton Pool Road in Dripping Springs, this swimming hole often needs a reservation. Expect long line in the weekend, and keep a lookout if they allow swimming for the day. Weather dictates if swimming is allowed, but there’s far more to enjoy apart from it.

The History of Lake Placid

Among the Adirondack Mountains in the state of New York, there is Lake Placid. The namesake of the Fenders guitars “Lake Placid Blue” guitars stretch at 2,170 acres and reaches 50 feet in depth. The lake and the village named after it are known as popular destinations during the winter. But before Lake Placid became a winter resort, the area’s extended winter posed a problem for its first settlers.

Before the pioneers, the area of Lake Placid was the settlement for the Iroquois and Mohawk Indians. Historians believed that they resided in the area during the summer, but went further south during winter.

Elijah Bennet and his wife, Rebecca, were the first white settlers of the area in 1800. They arrived at the place from Vermont after the Revolutionary War. Bennet served in the war and injured his left arm, leaving him handicapped. He, his wife, and their seven children resided on the land which is now currently the upper golf course of the Lake Placid Club. Golf course lovers would now go to this place to enjoy their favorite sport.

A Bit of History

Between 1800 and 1815, more people arrived at the area and settled in. The place slowly became a community. The residents began constructing churches, schools, and other establishments. However, by 1816, the residents experienced the “year without a summer.”

The year was ridden with blizzards all year round. The crops died due to the harsh weather and the residents were threatened with starvation. Farmers decided to move farther to the west, leaving only ten families to remain in the area.

One of the families who remained were the Osgood family. Squire Osgood took the opportunity and took the abandoned fields left behind by the families who moved away. Eventually, they established the first tavern and inn of the place.

During the late 1800s, population around Lake Placid bloomed again. In 1895, Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, designed the Placid Park Club. this became the inspiration of the villagers, who later adopted the name Lake Placid. The village known as Lake Placid was incorporated in the 1900s.

The Placid Park Club was later called as Lake Placid Club. The social and recreation club drew in the interest of the rich and famous. During the 1900s, more people saw the area’s potential for winter activities. In 1929, Dr. Godfrey Dewey, son of Melvil Dewey, talked to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He presented that Lake Placid had the best winter sports facilities in the United States.

In 1932 and 1980, the Lake Placid Club became the headquarters for the IOC during the Winter Olympics. Lake Placid itself became the site of both Winter Olympics and Olympic athletes and gold medal winners for the said event experienced their success in this location.

Today, the lake houses Buck Island, Moose Island, and Hawk Island. It is the source of drinking water of the village of Lake Placid. The lake gets its water from the springs and the streams from the Adirondacks mountain. Its shores have nearly 300 houses, but most of the houses are unoccupied for most of the year. Due to this, the lake’s water remains clean.

Winter sporting is now one of the great things to do here in Lake Placid. Being an Olympic center in the past, hosting gold medal winners and other Olympic athletes made it a great place to add to your vacation events calendar.

About Puget Sound

Later on, around 1845, the Lolani Palace in Oahu was built by the members of the victorious ruling empire.

Sixty years later, around December 1602, it was the explorer Sebastian Vizcaino who became the first European man to ever set foot on the bays shores.

It was then that he renamed it “Monte Rey Bay”, which is in honor of New Spain’s Viceroy who was the one who sponsored him the trip. It was also the viceroy who ordered his exploration. There were even recorded documents verifying that he and his crew of 200 people celebrated the expedition under a large oak tree that overlooks the bay.

In 1776, Spain also named Monterey as the region that would play the capital region of Baja (lower_ and Alta (which is the upper area). It was also the same year that Captain Juan Bautista de Anza was able to arrive from Sonora. These explorers, by the way, were bound to the areas of San Francisco.  It’s also necessary information for people to know the rich history of how Royal Presidio catered to the wives of the explorers. It was in Royal Presidio that the wives created pueblos and raised their families.

Another event in Monterey Bay was in 1818. That year, the effort to destroy Spain’s presence surrounding California was strong. Argentinian revolutionary and privateer named Hipolito Bouchard was the first person who attacked Monterey. After the biggest sea battles and fight in the region, Bouchard was able to claim the Monterey Bay.

Invasive species may latch on the bottom of the boat that may cross another body of water causing an imbalance on the marine life. It is the sole responsibility of the boaters to decontaminate their boating equipment properly. Doing it right protects the open waters from the devastating effect of invasive species. Even if the waters look clear and unpolluted, invasive species may hide under the surface of your boat. They can be as big as mussels and as tiny as a microbe. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Coast Guard recommend the following steps in decontaminating boats. It is very important to do these procedures every time boats come into contact with any body of water. 

CLEAN

•    Once docked, remove any visible plants, animals, mud, and dirt from the boat. Check the trailers, boots, fishing tackle, and other equipment that may have come in contact with the water. Tiny invasive species may hitchhike from the dirt and other plant fragments.

•    Thoroughly clean boating and fishing equipment including the boat’s cooling system, bilge using hot tap water. If hot is not available then spray the trailers, boats, floats, and anchors with a high-pressure spray.

•    In some cases, equipment cannot be exposed to hot water or high-pressure spray. Dipping in in vinegar for at least 20 minutes may do the trick. Another option is to immerse it with a once-percent salt water solution for 24 hours. 

•    For pets that cannot resist the water, wash them properly using tap water as soon as possible. They may hide unwanted creatures under their coats.

DRAIN

•    Empty waters from jet drives live wells, boat hulls, bait buckets, and motors. It is important to do this on site as doing it somewhere else may contaminate local waters. 

•    Do not dump unused bait into the waters even if it was bought from a store near the dock or caught in local waters. They may already be contaminated with other things. Dump it properly into a trash can. 

DRY

•    It is crucial for the boat and other equipment to dry for a minimum of 5 days before using them again in open waters.
